Abstract: This scientific article aims to analyze the use of utilitarian theory in Brazilian politics, in particular, in cases of “polarization” and “useful vote” strategies in the first round, adopted by parties in electoral campaigns. In this way, we seek to reflect critically on this phenomenon in Brazilian politics, in which voters, instead of opting for candidates and projects with which they most identify, give up their beliefs and criticisms to vote for the one they consider “less worse”. , with the aim of preventing another candidate from winning. In this step, we seek to weigh the parties' right to freedom of political expression when adopting this strategy and the possible impacts of this practice on the principle of political pluralism. Therefore, the methodology to be used will be logical-deductive, based on bibliographical references on the topic, which allows analyzing the impacts of the utilitarian doctrine on constitutional principles and Brazilian democracy.
