Abstract

This essay, the result of a lecture delivered at the Centro Universitário Assunção in 2026, deals with the problem of lying within the contemporary public space. The fundamental question is: how is the creation, dissemination, and adherence to lies in politics possible in the contemporary world? The reflection undertaken here relates the phenomenon of mass loneliness to the adherence to lies with ever-increasing force and, to this end, begins with the posing of the problem based on an essay by Kant, and develops within the reflections of Hannah Arendt's political philosophy. The text examines lying as the official discourse of totalitarian regimes, which make use of ideology and terror to produce the isolation and loneliness of individuals, docile targets of these lies. It then reflects on the crystallized elements of totalitarianism in today's world and draws attention to its dangers.
