This article approaches the film director's creative activity in the light of Frege's epistemology, which distinguishes the faculties related to thought, understood as the understanding of communicable objective contents, and to representation, which is the ability to produce mental images. The transposition of informative content objectively expressed in the script, with its own syntax, to the syntax of the movie itself, composed of takes, scenes and sequences, imposes the need for a subjective stage in the work of the director who must produce a 'mental movie', as a close paradigm to the final cinematographic product. In this sense, we seek to understand the solitary character of the director's creative process and the contradictions of this condition with the essentially collective character of cinematographic production.
