Abstract

Based on the concepts of globalization, English as a Língua Franca, and multiliteracies—relevant and outlined by the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) for English Language teaching in Brazil—this article analyzes the most chosen textbook for High School in PNLD 2021. The analysis highlights the use of visual elements to support the concept of multiliteracies. However, it notes a significant reduction of these resources in the final units, which may inhibit the development of skills needed to interpret multimodal texts. The focus was on Unit Three’s cartoons, authored by Randy Glasbergen and used to promote reflections on technology. Despite their initial relevance, the associated exercises lack critical depth and an approach that embraces the cultural diversity of the English language. This approach reduces the exploration of language as a global phenomenon and does not contribute to the development of critical and intercultural skills expected by BNCC. It is concluded that, although the material has pedagogical potential, its approach can be expanded to promote greater plurality and autonomy in the learning process.
